blog 10 post 3

I learned that when editing you need to know the movie inside out the timing, tone and the structure. You also need to know the boss so you can predict what he would like or want to do. When you edit just don't make the clips flow together make it look unique. Always over achieve what the boss expects of you and fallow what he wants.

I think some of the best movies got to where they are because of work the editors put in.

I believe that these rules are good to fallow, but not all the time.

What do you do if you know what the director wants looks bad and could ruin the movie do you listen to him or do you do your own thing?

blog 10 post 2

I learned about good elements of movies like a good opening for the type of film like a action may have a few short scenes while a romance could have one long scene to set the pacing. Another  thing is to have second problem like say on the hero's journey to beat the villain his mental state is becoming unstable but doesn't tell anyone. also picking the world it takes place in show something new about the one were in or make a world we don't know and show things that are different.

These are good points to keep in mind when creating the film.

I think just because you have these tips in your movie doesn't mean you will get an award.

What does suspense of disbelief mean? their description just confuses me.

blog 10 post 1

This week I learned how to use tracking and cameras in after effects along with using masks and different particle affects.

What I want to know is how does a video game work?

What made me happy this week is that my cousin was back from boot camp.

Something that frustrated me is I cant get the start of my type project just right.

This is a song I got stuck in my head  http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=biUnzjsuehA

blog 9 post 3

I learned that frozen is based off a folk tale. Disney wanted to make a animated movie on it, but the story didn't have greatly developed characters or plot. Disney then remade the story from scratch and more appealing to modern day moviegoers.

I think its cool that the story is based on a folk tale.

The rendering of the castle is insane 30 hours for one frame.

What is the name of the tale that the movie is based on?

blog 9 post 2

I learned its good to be able to animate both human and creatures because most animated films have some sort of animal. I also learned to add real animal movements to even fantasy creatures, but also that you have to compensate for size and height. I also learned that weight matters to if its a big heavy creature its going to move differently and feel different.

I think this article had some common sense things in it like matching the right movement to your creature.

This article also had something I never thought about before the weight of the creature

How can you make a creature feel heavy or light?

blog 9 post 1

This week I learned how to do different things with text in after effects things making it 3D and applying different animations to it.

What I want to learn is anything that I wasn't taught yet.

What frustrated me this week is I'm somewhat behind on tutorials.

What made me happy this week is that I got a Xbox one.

I think this is neat, but needs improvement what if your on a steep mountain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BtRnzlO7m_M&feature=player_detailpage

blog 8 post 3

I learned that Disney was trying to make a new animated  short look like it was a older Mickey Mouse. they had add mistakes and leave some details frame by frame. They also took  the original sounds out the real older mickey cartoons and cleaned them up a little bit. Also to help recreate the old mickey mouse they had to add a flickering lighting in the background changing the levels frame by frame as well.

I think its cool that they recreated the effect of older shorts.

I think it was interesting how they had to animate in the first years of mickey mouse.

Does the recreated short look just like the original or are there big differences?

blog 8 post 2

I learned that the VFX and animation departments are growing. With the growth these fields are available world wide. I also learned that you don't need to be a great artist or that great with technical things as long as you have  some experience those things can improve while working on it. The field is also very demanding and a decent pay is not enough motivation it has to be something you love. I also learned about the different positions and shouldn't expect to work for a big studio right off the bat.

I like how the article told you a little about the entry jobs and what you could expect to movie up to and get into.

I think that the industry is growing but not as much as was mentioned it is still very competitive.

Has anyone went to a big studio right after they got out of school?

blog 8 post 1

This week I really didn't learn anything new I just improved on using what I learned.

What I want to learn is how to better improve my work.

What frustrated me this week is the sound of my voice in our documentary it just feels weird.

What made me happy is that I found a new money glitch in GTA 5 it makes the game so much easier.

This is a bit random but these things blew my mind all over the wall  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ni5HOdGtzM&feature=player_detailpage.

blog7 post 3

I learned that when filming and  your going to use natural light it takes more preparation than with studio lights. Picking the right camera for the job is a good start and there's no one size fits all camera. Use the sun for your back light and film during the "magic hour" if you film at the certain times it could change the entire look. You also need to pick the right location and at night use lighting like lamps and lit signs. Rehearsing over and over helps you get down that right shot and learn what you need to work on and fix.

I think the most important tip is rehearsing once you learn how to get the shot it makes a better film.

I think what really makes filming with natural light hard is that every day could be different and you might not have the same light as the day before.

Will it take longer to film in natural light than in a studio?

blog 7 post 2

I learn how Richard Balzer began collecting different early animation pieces like phenakistoscopes, praxinoscopes, and zoetropes. Then he started to turn them into gifs and share them in tumblr.

I love these they are really neat I like how they look. Like how the devils head kept regrowing.

I think its cool to have one of those things I might even start my own collection.

How many of these early animations does he have?

blog 7 post 1

This week I learned more about different camera shots and even filmed a few examples I also learned that documentaries can have many different styles and feeling each one is unique.

I want to learn how CGI works with video games.

What made me happy is that I passed my road test.

Something that made me upset I learned that the quest project is due Tuesday and I didn't even look at it yet.

I thought this was cool I'm always being bitten by mosquitos   http://www.coolthings.com/kite-mosquito-patch/

blog 6 post 3

I learned that a lot of work went into the movie cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2 one of the shots took 2.15 million hours by 30 different artists to finish it. they were also have a hard time with the physics of the scenes. Each step took months of tweaking and trying to get the motions look real. The end result was movements so real they were impossible 5 years ago.

I think for all the trouble they went through the result was worth it.

I also think that the animators and effect artists did great giving the director what he want instead of doing what's easier for them.

I wonder what troubles did they go through from start to finish? It would be interesting to know all the details.

blog 6 post 2

I learned that not all effects are computer generated there are still makeups and such, but the materials used changed and it helped a lot causing artists to make better and more realistic effects. The cast and make can also be changed with the help of touchups by computer editing.

I think its good that makeup has improved and is still in use some affects you cant get without it.

I also think its cool that using computers to make quick edits to anything that you need.

Which is better to use CGI or makeup or maybe even a mixture of both?

blog 6 post 1

This week I learned more about the cameras we will be using and about different shots like over the shoulder, worms eye view as well as pans.

What I want to learn is how to make different effects.

Something that made me happy is that we are finally working with the cameras.

What frustrated me is I didn't get a few steps in the tutorials, eventually I figured it out.

blog 5 post 2

I learned that we may have created zombies to the thought of our advancing technology and our market system also zombie movies were not really popular till the eighties.

I think zombies are just monsters we created to scare ourselves, but I also think that our advancing tech is really why zombies were created.

Do we really need reasons why we like zombies why not like them just because of the world they could bring with so many different scenarios and stories they could fit with most peoples fears if looked at in the right point of view.

blog 5 post 1

I learned that a problem has occurred with female characters being pretty all the time. The animator said that animating females are harder than males because they need to be emotional and have expressions that look different. In reality females are no harder than males when animating.

I think that its true the animation teams are a all boys club and may need some female influence, but that means more girls need to get careers in the field to change it.

I also think that it takes more effort to make female characters look good than to animate them.

Why is this a big deal if you don't like how things are couldn't you get into a position to change it?

blog 4 post 3

I learned that though there are many different styles of animated films but they don't  have their own genre. There are many animated films but are all considered one category. With all the films there is a lot of competition.

I think animated films should have categories of their own.

I believe their are too many animated films the craze is beginning  to end.

Why make animated films only targeting younger kids why not a adults?

blog 4 post 2

I learned that in braking bad they made people feel sympathetic for Walt even though he killed people and made questionable decisions. They did this by using point of view they focused on things that the character was looking at and then switched back to Walters face. The characters expressions also helped along with the story from his point of view.

I think seeing thing from the characters point of view helps you understand them.

I believe that seeing things from their point of view also makes you more emotional toward them.

Though this is a good technique couldn't always work what if there's a terrible back story?

blog 4 post 1

This week I learned how to use different equipment and what would be good to use for certain scenes.

What made me happy this week is that its the weekend and I am probably going hunting.

What frustrated me this week is that it just felt like a long week and I was busy.

What I want to learn is how different affects are added to films.

http://www.raindance.org/5-simple-mistakes-documentary-filmmakers-make/ I found these mistakes and thought they might be common.

blog 3 post 3

I learn how Walt and Jim both grew up in the south and how each of their experiences shaped the movies they made and why they became film makers. They both also considered themselves film makers first everything else second.

I think its cool that two of the best film makers were so similar but different at the same time.

I didn't know much about either of them till I read  this article especially Jim.

Did Jim and Walt ever meet and hangout?

blog 3 post 2

I learned how to make my storyboards more dynamic by drawing in a 3-point view I also learned to draw a grid or something for a floor so things don't look like their floating. labeling characters also helps to organize them on stage so nobody gets confused.

I think the article had some good information on storyboards.

I don't think ill be able to draw in the way to make it look 3 dimensional.

How do storyboards affect the look and feel of a film?

blog 3 post 1

This week I learned about the upcoming project how we need to make a story with only sounds

What made me happy this weekend is that we went to Becker farms and picked apples.

Nothing frustrated me this week just a little stressed from all the school work.

What I want to learn is why does certain music trigger different emotions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxFfxTZA6ao&feature=player_detailpage I stared with my mouth open for a few minutes cried then laughed what were the odds that would happen.

blog 2 post 3

I learned that brands that use a video to tell a story of what their about make more connections to the audience and brands that constantly just mention them and how their the best still do good but make less connections.

I think that all brands should advertise this way it would make it more interesting.

The two videos from chipotle made think about how fast food is made and now how everyone is making everything "fresh".

Why do commercials do what they do if its possible to advertise the way chipotle did?

blog 2 post 2

I learned that we can interpret sounds to different emotions and the right sound could make a scene that much more horrific, romantic and thrilling.

I think sound plays a bigger role in movies because I always listen to the music first then what the actors are saying then the picture.

I believe sounds could definitely make more brake a scene you dont want a happy sound during a murder it would just ruin the scene.

Why could people feel different things from different sounds?

blog 2 post 1

I learned about color this week my favorite is purple, orange and green triad.

What I want to learn is how to better blend pictures togeather.

what made me happy this week is that im cought up in work and GTA 5 is out.

What fusterated me this weekend I have a bad cold and cant breathe with a small headace.

I learned about how perspective is important when using miniatures. I also learned that if one thing is off it could ruin the shots as well as using miniatures allows you to see how the shot looks on camera.

I think the illusion was really cool.

I cant believe how the shot turned out its cool that they used a small toy.

Could you produce the same shot with CGI?

blog 1 post 2

I learned that a lot of animated movies are and were released. I also learned that because of all the movies its making big competition. I learned that animated movies are also 2nd in sales at the box office.

I think its good that animated movies are still coming out strong I love them.

I just hope animated movies get better because of the competition.

Why are all the companies focused on animated films.

Blog 1 post 1

This week I learned about how to use layers and filters in Photoshop.

What I want to learn is how to edit video.

What frustrated me this week was getting the filters to do what I wanted.

What made  me happy this week is I just hit level 50 in diablo 3.

finial blog post 3

I learned that TV has changed over the years to reality shows and they are more adult but there are also others that are not bad like the amazing race and duck dynasty. These made a family TV time to come back.

I believe that many of the reality tv shows are just drama and are stupid and do bring the end to family tv.

The few shows that are still good to watch as a family I believe these are the ones we should promote because they bring the family together again

How did reality tv even get popular?

final blog post 2

I learned about paint on glass animation. I learned that you had to paint each frame and if you made a mistake you had to start from the beginning. I learned that very few people animate with this style because it takes a long time literally years to finish. I also learned that petrov spent about two years finishing a film of The Old Man and The Sea and he won a Oscar for it.

I think if I tried this I would give up after a month.

I think that paint on glass is a cool way to animate it has a neat look to it.

Why don't we do this as a project?

final blog post 1

1. In general, what did you like most about this class?
I loved the hands on experience with the programs.

2. In general, what did you like least about this class?
I dreaded the five page paper to think I do it again for another year I must be crazy.

3. What were your most favorite project and least favorite project and why?
My favorite project would be the rotoscope because I got to video tape myself and had to combine the use of three different programs. My least favorite would be the stop motion taking all those pictures was extremely slow process.

4. Do you feel that this class will help you achieve your future academic or career goals? How or why (or why not)? Yes I do think the class will help me achieve my goals because it gave me a head start by using programs and knowledge of the media industry.

5. Additional comments: I had lots of fun and all my classmates had great personalities I enjoyed the time I spent in the class

I learned that Disney changed the character that was supposed to be a role model to little girls changed her to be more adult.

I think they should have left her the same though now is more appealing.

I believe that they were trying to make something that would sell better.

Why did Disney change the princess? wouldn't it have been better to keep her the same to avoid something like this?

blog 24 post 2

I learned that film makers make mistakes while making documentaries. The mistakes that I would over look would be the theme and the type of questions.

I think that out of all of the mistakes the music would have the most impacts.
I also think that picking the person to do a documentary on would make a difference.

What would be a good theme to base a documentary on?

blog 24 post 1

This week I learned how to link pages to buttons.

What frustrated me this week is I don't know how I want to further change my site.
What made me happy is that we finished the final projects and in the home stretch.

I learned that there was a program created to let people to make a original animation for tv but there were only 3 episodes and they were never released. I also learned that its slowly changing so original shows could be put on tv.

I could see why its moving slowly not only do you have to go through executives but also who wants to watch a student made animation that's probably really cheesy.

I think it was a good attempt and help opened up opportunities.

Are there any other programs that are still working toward this goal?

blog 23 post 2

I learned that a independent film maker made a movie by filming with his ipad 2 and the result was a grainy like texture  like a old movie and what inspired this was the low budgets of independent films. He made the movie solely for the ipad.

I think that's cool I wouldn't have thought to use something like that.

I still would prefer a camera.

What will be next a full length movie from the iphone?

This week I learned little we just finished final projects

I learned to make a good six second film you need to plan it out very well. The mood really helps the film because most have the same lighting and look and I also learned to keep the viewer wanting more wondering what happened at the start and what will happen in the end.

I think if we did this it would be vary challenging I don't think ill be able to make a good one.

My favorite video was lazeranddonald close shave it set a dark atmosphere and I thought it was creepy.

Could a six second film possibly be a future project for us?

blog 22 post 2

I learned that in general to make a cute character it needs a big head big, wide eyes and look chubby. most of pixars characters look this way. Cute is something that triggers the nature to care for it.

I think what cute is depends differently for each person one might think its adorable while others might not.

I think Blair was right with the physical appearance of something cute.

Why do those type of features trigger what we call cute and adorable? What makes us feel that way toward them?

blog 22 post 1

This week I learned how to use wix to create a site.

What frustrated me this week is that I am behind on my site and animation.
What made me happy is that I am half way done with animating, but I still need to lip sync.

What I want to learn is how to get my projects on the site and how to add them on YouTube.

Moores law predicted that technology would increase by 100 in 10 years.Moores law isn't completely true because the people have to make it before it exists so the higher factors are not there yet. pixar used the law to make toy story so it would be sucessful.

I think it would be cool to be able to tell when technology will advance before it does.

I also think its cool that some companies are using Moores law to help their products.

What happens to the law when technology gets so advanced it would no longer increase?

blog 21 post 2

Robots were made to film interviews at the new york film festival. People were more open to the robots and answered honestly. People are more open in talking to AIs than other people.

I think its weird that people are more open to robots but I also think it makes sense because your not worried what it thinks of you or if it even thinks of feels.

Are the robots taking good footage? They are so small.

This week I learned how to use the subselection tool better

What made me happy this week is that I got to work on my project at home.

I learned that Jonathan coulton is creating a comic with all his songs being characters and has a very interesting way of combining them all togeather.

I would get the book if I can it sounds great.
I think this is a good idea because most people could connect to his song in one way or another.

I wounder how all the songs and story comes togeather? It should be interesting.

blog 20 post 2

I learned that Disney accidentally took someones art work and put it on their products also they didn't check if it was copyrighted or talk to the artist about using it.

Disney probably should have checked the image for any copyright.
I think artist should be a bit looser with thier work but that aside she should have been excited her image was on disney products though she wouldnt get credit is the downer.

Did Disney know that the image was copy righted?

These were interesting tips I like how there were short examples for each tip.

What about length of the story?

blog 19 post 2

I learned a Japanese team is trying to make a smell O vision TV. There was already smell boxes invented. The smell O vision will allow you to smell through the pixels and where it is positioned on the screen.

I like the idea of advancing this invention but because of the extra work needed for games and movies to add the codes to release the sent as well as pricing it might have a very limited market.

Why use sented oils is there any other thing that could work and be cheaper?

blog 19 post 1

I learned that if I put the mouths in the character symbol it will move with it.

I learned that the camera cant run long in cold conditions and give it a chance to adjust to the temperature so it doesn't fog the lens. Also clear plastic bag can help keep condensation off of the camera and on the bag.

I like the tip about the phone somthings telling me he had some experiance.
I also like the tip about how to get more detail out of the bright white snow exposure.

Why does the camera not last as long if its cold?

blog 18 post 2

I learned that they used puppets to help make the animated versions and I also learned that they used those puppets to help interact with the actors and that they used the monkey from the hangover to get better expressions.

I like how they tried to give it a classic feel by filming on a stage.
They put unique techniques into the movie like the puppet and the monkey along with the way they filmed.

Did the actors also work with the monkey for  their performance?

I learned how Pixar uses physics and math to keep their animations real. I also learned that they had to create a separate engine to animate the hair in the movie Brave.

I think its crazy that if they change a character they have to rewrite the physics from scratch.

I also think its amazing how they said to use mathematics to quickly form believable parabolas to a charater shape.

Is there anymore involved math that goes into creating animations.

blog 17 post 2

From the article I learned how to be better in front of a camera. You want to be entertaining but not so energetic that its annoying. Having clear video and audio help keep viewers watching. Also have enough light so you are visible.

I think most of the tips are common knowledge.
I think the way to get a video viral is to make it be something of interest at the time and add some twists timing is key.

How do people make a living making youtube videos it cant pay that much?

I learned that workers are being constantly exploited in other countries and that many have to go along with ridiculous policies and agreements.

I think businesses should just give decent hours and pay sure you make a little less but their making millions anyway.

I think its wrong for the businesses to do things like this to workers its unfair and they get rich off of your hard work.

Why would so many workers put up with these things if you could get a better job or do somthing else?

blog 16 post 2

I learned that many visual effect studios are starting to go bankrupt. That because foreign subsidies were often better to work with and they violate international trade agreements.

I think its sad many studios are going down because of this not to mention it has agreement violations.
I could also see the other side with trying to make the best film possible in the cheapest way and the most benificial.

what happens when all the effect companies become bankrupt?

When do they use their own tips?

I learned Serkis started his own studio for motion capture. Motion capture is also becoming more used and might be the next generation for film making.

I think it is a good way to make movies instead of the low emotion 3D characters.
The only problem I see with a smaller work force is less people have jobs and those working may have more response ability.

How is this technology only starting to be more used? its cool and looks real.

I learned the director lied to get a job, but he used movies nobody saw that much and he knew alot about the movies. He takes ideas from every movie he could and make somthing new with the parts. I also learned that he put many personal things into movies, but they were covered so much that only he and people who knew him could tell.

I think these tips are helpful.
Im not sure you should lie to help get something I guess its just doesnt agree to my ethics I dont like to lie it kills me and I would feel guilty.

I learned fxphd was involved with the films and gave students the chance to participate in the project. I also learned two of the films made it into the festival.

I think its great that students got to work with projects to enter in the film festival.
I also think its amazing that two films were entered when there were over 800 film entries.

Do they give that oppertunity for students to participate in most festivals?

This week I learned about joints there are many different kinds like the hinge and saddle joint.

What made me happy this week is that I got my paper in on time.
What frustrated me this week it took longer to finish the paper than I thought it would.

What I want to learn is good use for the f curve and key editor in cheetah.

Disney is trying to make another video game "ugh".
I learned that you have to buy the figures separately from the game.
They are trying to make it so you can build your own world and game.

I dont like having to buy extra figures just to play a game.
I think Disney is just trying to make a few quick bucks.

Why make a game with separate parts like that?

I learned that the movie escape from tomorrow has many copy righted things from Disney.
They filmed in the actual theme park with Disney some what aware.
That the film is majorly pushing copy right laws and may have to settle things with Disney.

they knew what they were doing and I'm surprised if there wont be any legal actions.
I think they had a good movie idea, but why film at Disney its probably one of the most copy right theme parks in the world.
